When it comes to your CV – it is very important.
Your CV is the first impression an employer or Recruiter will see. Your CV will determine whether they will bring you in for an interview or not. Your resume, therefore, is crucial to your success in a job search. A resume should be solid, straight-forward, and easy-to-read, highlighting your best achievements and accomplishments.
In all the years we have worked in the recruitment industry candidates often forget that their CV is a representation of their brand. In a highly competitive market, it is even more important to ensure that you “market” yourself in the best way.
We personally don’t think a long covering letter is a way to go, people do not have time to read pages and pages of your life story. Rather have a short introduction (4-8 lines) that gives a description of your experience, skills and career objectives. Edit your introduction for specific roles to highlight specific skills for a role. Read the spec you are applying for and make sure you at least meet 80% of the requirements.
Create a flawlessly professional image
With recruiters receiving 100’s of CVs per job vacancy, a professional appearance is essential if you want to stand out from the crowd. Your CV is your marketing material for your services, so if it looks sloppy or untidy, it’s unlikely to get you shortlisted for an interview. Take the time to make sure your CV looks immaculate by using a clean and simple font, a professional title heading and clear section headings and dividers.
Build an easy-to-read structure
Recruiters and hiring managers tend to be very busy and often review hundreds of CVs every week. For this reason, it’s very important to make your CV easy to skim read and pick out the key information they need. Keep your CV to around 2 pages in length and break the information up using short paragraphs and plenty of bullet points. Avoid writing big long chunks of text as they will make your CV very unappealing to read and difficult for readers to find the requirements that they are looking for.
Detailed or Condensed?
When it comes to doing your Curriculum Vitae it can be difficult, some companies requested long detailed CV’s and others ask for short to the point CV. So out suggestion is taking the time to make both. Keep in mind that your CV is the first impression that an employer gets of you so there is no reason to believe that you are spending to much time on it.
Tell your story
Think of your CV as a marketing document, it is selling you as a perfect candidate. It is a good idea to remember that when applying for a particular position, remember it is important to keep a record of all positions that you have held, but when it comes to applying for a particular position it is important to highlight and provide information on relevant experience.
The key is in the detail
Remember to add:
• Name & Surname
• Nicknames
• Identity Number
• Gender
• Area Residing
• Contact information (Cellphone, email and WhatsApp)
• Home Language and Others Spoken
• Drivers License and code
• Education (Qualification, Year Completed & Subjects)
• Further Education (College / Courses)
• Relevant program experience
• Name of Company
• Position Held
• Duties / Responsibilities
• Dates Employed (Ensuring you list both month and years)
• Reason for leaving (More detail the better)
• References (Ensuing never to add current employer unless otherwise stated)
Keep it reversed
List your most recent positions first, it makes it a lot easier to read
Formatting
Keep it simple, when it comes to text remember to keep it plan. Stay away from cursive, bold, italics or colourful texts, keep it to fonts such as- Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri Light etc.. Keep your text to no smaller than 11 never bigger than 12 unless it is a heading. When it comes to saving your document always ensure that it is either saved as a Word document or as a PDF. Don’t be afraid to play around with different templates available both on Word and online, they can be great at giving you a solid starting point! We also have a few templets you can use and download below
Order of content
Have you ever wondered how to place your information on your CV?
1. Motivational Letter
2. Personal Information
3. Educational Information
4. Further Education
5. Work History
6. References
7. Certificates / Documentation (If required)
Give ‘em the numbers!
If you are in a position were figures are prevalent don’t be frightened to add them into your CV, by quantifying your accomplishments, you really allow the hiring manager to picture the level of work or responsibility you needed to achieve them.
Name Your File Smartly
